Title: Family Tree Maker – A four-part series

Dates: 1/11, 1/18, 1/25 & 2/1

Time: 10:00 – 11:30 AM

Presenter: Carol Clemens

Location: ZOOM (please note that the Zoom link for each class will be sent to registered participants the day before each scheduled class in the series).

Cost: $40 for Library Members and $50 for Non-members

 

Part 1: Overview and the First Steps: Why use Family tree Maker 2019 software? What can be produced with it? How do I buy the software? How do I properly do the necessary setup before entering any data into the program? Even if you are currently using FTM, you will learn how the program is organized and the proper setup to get the most from the software. These classes assume you have basic computer skills. The software is available for MAC and PC users.

 

Part 2: Getting Started – People and Media Tabs: Now it time to add people; set relationships; add and categorize media; set profile pictures; link media to several people at once; back up your files and more. This class gets you started on the process of documenting your family history with this software. Please note: You must have purchased FTM 2019, installed it on your computer and done the required preliminary setup covered in part 1.

 

Part 3: Introducing the Web Search: Learn to search websites through FTM, add favorite search sites; add information directly to your tree. Additional information on Media and maps will be included. This is the next step toward creating a finished product.

 

Part 4: Creating a Final Product – Find and fix errors and get started with the Publish Tab: The last step in the process of creating a final project. Participants will learn how to find and fix duplicate information and errors; learn what reports can be created from the software; how to share your work; and how to create a book.


Title: Community & Conflict: Colonial Hilton Head 1717-1783

This is a Semiquincentennial presentation. Creating a community on the Southern boundary of the American Colonies became a necessity for survival, and it became a source of conflict between remote government authority and the needs of enterprising settlers in the lands south of Charles Town. Learn how Hilton Head Island was a microcosm of this regional strife well before the drums of revolution began to beat.

Title: How to Use the Ancestry DNA “Side View Tools”

Date: 2/7

This class centers on sorting your Ancestry matches by parent even if they died before you could test their autosomal DNA. Or if one parent or grandparent is unknown, learn how this tool can help you identify DNA cousins from your missing ancestor. Jan is a former president, board member and conference chair for the National Genealogical Society with more than 20 years of experience working with DNA to help solve genealogical brick walls.


Title: The Coercive (aka intolerable) Acts of 1774

This is a Semiquincentennial presentation. The British called them Coercive Acts and they were designed to punish Boston for their Tea party. The roots of the Acts began with the burning of HMS Gaspee in 1772 and led to the convening of the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia.


Title: The Underground Railroad and Quest for Freedom

Date: 2/20

This presentation describes the heroic efforts of African Americans and whites to hide and guide runaway slaves in their desperate journeys to freedom in the north and in Canada. Learn about the stories of escaping slaves and their encounters with slave catchers and kidnappers; the courageous work of railroad “conductors”; the role of plantation slavery, African American churches and slave revolts in generating the growth of the Underground Railroad.

You have done the research and now you want to publish your family story – let us help you through the process. What do you need to prepare and how do you find a reputable publishing company or a company that is reliable if you are looking to self-publish. And very important to your project – how do you avoid the scammers.


Title: Tea and Torture in 1774

This is a Semiquincentennial presentation. While Boston had the first Tea Party the revelry surrounding tea extended down the Eastern Seaboard as far South as Charles Town. The Pantheon of Revolutionary heroes the Sons of Liberty rate highly but these were not necessarily always gentlemen but practitioners of arson, hanging in effigy, and tarring and feathering (a particularly gruesome action). Learn about how it was not just as simple as dumping tea. 


Title: Crossing the Combahee – Settlement of the Southern Parishes and Beaufort District

With the fortifications of Charles Town intact, the defenses of the Southern frontier of the 13 colonies began to develop near major river crossings along the King’s Highway south of Edisto. Intrepid Indian traders and eager ranchers followed them closely, placing their trading posts and ranch homesteads near the forts.  Learn about the settler families who were earliest in the area and the political forces affecting their choices.

In the midst of the Civil War and shortly after his arrival on Hilton Head, General Ormsby Mitchel meets with General Rufus Saxton to discuss the situation in Port Royal and the Department of the South. Their conversation touches on the issues and strategies that will ultimately shape the landscape for Reconstruction on the Sea Islands.

This is a Semiquincentennial presentation. American women had many and diverse roles in the Continental forces’ ability to wage war effectively. This presentation will highlight some of the most notable examples of these willing warriors and their contributions to American victory.
