Hilton Head Cemeteries

The cemeteries on Hilton Head Island contained, for the most part, African-American slaves of the local plantation owners. Many no longer exist. Volunteers from the Heritage Library have compiled information from various sources about all the cemeteries on the island. This information is filed in a binder available in the library.

White Family Cemetery

Location: 10 Union Cemetery Road

From the book, “Hilton Head Island Cemeteries”, Compiled by Karen Marsh Gobrecht And John Griffin

The White Family Cemetery may be the only African American cemetery on Hilton Head that does not have frontage on the water or a marsh. This land was originally used as burial grounds for the Union soldiers and military personnel during the Civil War. After they were moved to the National Cemetery in Beaufort, the cemetery then became the White Family Cemetery maintained by St. James Baptist Church.
