There were over 110 significant encounters between partisan forces in Beaufort District during the Revolution. This talk covers the most significant of the actions, ambushes, battles, and skirmishes leading up to and following the date of our independence from English rule.

While Robert Smalls is best known for his daring escape from slavery in Charleston harbor, his leadership in the era of post-Civil War Reconstruction is perhaps his greatest contribution to the advancement of American democracy. This presentation recounts Small’s pivotal role in the struggle to defend and extend African American rights in the tense, sometimes explosive atmosphere of South Carolina Reconstruction.

Increasing British oppression in the colonial commercial world dominated by shipping demanded staunch resistance from those most severely oppressed. This talk will address the most significant naval incidents occurring in Beaufort District and the individual actions taken to ensure independence and fair trade for the area’s ports.
