Description: Even before the American Colonies declared their independence, the British invaded Staten Island on 3 July 1776 thus initiating a successful campaign to seize New York City, which they controlled until the peace treaty was signed. Less than a year later a British Army, numbering 7,000 soldiers, surrendered to the upstart Americans in the woods of upstate New York. While the war would continue for another four years this surrender, in retrospect, was the turning point of the American Revolution.
